Dr. Kunkel is also Professor of Pediatrics and of Genetics at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. He received his B.A. degree from Gettysburg College and his Ph.D. degree in biology from the Johns Hopkins University. His postdoctoral training was with Brian McCarthy at the University of California, San Francisco, and with Samuel Latt at Children's Hospital Boston. He held appointments at Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School before joining HHMI. His honors include the William Allan Award from the American Society of Human Genetics and the Gairdner International Award. Dr. Kunkel is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was recently elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Louis Kunkel is interested in the molecular genetic basis of human neuromuscular diseases. His work has led to improved diagnosis and rational approaches to therapy of muscular dystrophies.
