EMBO/HHMI Young Investigators, Scientists Named

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) has named three EMBO/HHMI Young Investigators and two EMBO/HHMI Scientists from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. They will receive $26,000 annually for three years from a grant to EMBO from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Young investigators are Zdena Palková, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic; Janusz M. Bujnicki, International Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Warsaw, Poland; and Igor Konieczny, University of Gdansk, Poland. The scientists are László Homolya, Semmelweis University/Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary; and Miklos Nyitrai, University of Pécs Medical School, Pécs, Hungary.

“EMBO and HHMI encourage networking among European researchers.”

EMBO/HHMI Young Investigators and Scientists are promising European molecular biologists early in their research careers. Like EMBO Young Investigators, they will be mentored by EMBO members and will attend an annual scientific meeting with EMBO scientists and HHMI international research scholars from the region. The next meeting is scheduled for May 2003 in Heidelberg, Germany. The EMBO/HHMI Young Investigators and Scientists also will be invited to the annual scientific meeting of HHMIs 132 International Research Scholars from 29 countries.

The EMBO/HHMI programs are designed to encourage networking among European researchers and help launch the careers of some of the outstanding young scientists in Europe.
