Where is Janelia Farm?
The Janelia Farm Research Campus is located on 689-parklike acres on the banks of the Potomac River in Loudoun County, Virginia, just 30 miles from Washington, D.C., and about eight miles north of Dulles Airport.
The site was selected for its verdant setting, its proximity to both a major airport and HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and the abundant resources available in the region, including a variety of housing options, quality schools, and other residential services for employees.
Formerly the home and farm of Vinton and Robert Pickens, Janelia Farm got its name from a recombination of the names of their daughters, Jane and Cornelia.

FROM I-495 SOUTH
- Take Exit 43-44
- Continue on Ramp to Exit 44 (Georgetown Pike)
- Continue on Georgetown Pike/Old Georgetown Pike for approximately 9 miles to the end.
- Turn right on Leesburg Pike (Rt. 7)
- Continue on Rt. 7 for approximately 6 miles
- Turn right onto Janelia Farm Blvd (across from Ashburn Village).
- Turn right at next stop sign (Helix Drive)
- Check in at Security Gate
- You will be given parking instructions at
the Security Gate.
DIRECTIONS FROM DULLES AIRPORT
(IAD)
- Exit the airport going toward Washington.
- Take Rt. 28 North (exit #9B) toward Sterling and go North for 6.5 miles.
- Merge onto Leesburg Pike (Rt. 7) West toward Leesburg (left exit).
- Turn right (2.3 miles) onto Janelia Farm Boulevard (across from Ashburn Village).
- At the stop sign, turn right onto Helix Drive and follow the road to the Security Gate.
- You will be given parking instructions at the Security Gate.
FROM DULLES TOLL ROAD WEST
- Take I-66 or I-495 to the Dulles Toll road West to Rt. 28 North, then Rt. 7 West
- Proceed on Rt. 7 West for about 2 miles
- Make a right onto Janelia Farm Blvd (across from Ashburn Village).
- Turn right at next stop sign (Helix Drive)
- Check in at Security Gate
- You will be given parking instructions at
the Security Gate.
FROM ROUTE 7 EAST
- Approximately 4 miles from Leesburg make a left onto Janelia Farm Blvd (across from Ashburn Village).
