About the Grants Office

International Program

Through its International Program, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute seeks to support individual scientists of the highest quality in their home countries and to join them with each other and with other scientists in the HHMI community to create an international network of scientific excellence. The Institute's support of these leaders in their home countries aims to encourage the most creative researchers, to help disseminate their work, and to strengthen their research environments and educational opportunities.

International Research Scholars Program
This HHMI initiative supports promising non-U.S. scientists who are contributing significantly to the understanding of basic biological processes or disease mechanisms but whose careers are still developing. Grants are awarded through competitions for scientists working in specific countries or specific research areas.

Currently, HHMI supports scientists working in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Lithuania, Mali, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
An HHMI grant to EMBO supports a program to help launch the careers of promising molecular biologists in countries in which EMBO funding and HHMI funding (through its International Research Scholars Program) overlap. Funds support the young scientists' research and networking opportunities.

International Courses and Workshops
HHMI supports periodic scientific workshops and laboratory courses that are held outside the United States at the home institutions of HHMI's international research scholars. The courses are intended to help build an infrastructure for biomedical research in the regions where the scholars work, as well as to strengthen the exchange of information between the United States and the international scientific community.
