Janelia Farm Research CampusIn August 2006, HHMI opened its Janelia Farm research Campus. Situated on a 689-acre site along the Potomac River in Ashburn, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., the campus provides the setting for interdisciplinary, collaborative research focused on two areas: identifying the general principles that govern how information is processed by neuronal circuits; and developing imaging technologies and computational methods for image analysis. the total development cost was $500 million. In its first year of operation, research expenditures at Janelia Farm totaled approximately $67 million, of which $15 million represented personnel expenditures and approximately $32 million was for equipment and outfitting. When Janelia Farm is at full capacity, it will house a permanent research staff of about 250—including 24 group leaders and 20 fellows—and up to 100 visiting scientists. |
